Now that Thanksgiving is over, it seems like everyone is getting in the Christmas spirit, and rock legend Bob Dylan is no exception. He released his latest CD, a compilation of fifteen classic Christmas songs redone with a personal touch.
While at times it can be kind of weird to hear a raspy, harsh voice singing classic Christmas songs that many of us grew up listening to, Dylan does an incredible job on many of the songs.
One of the best on the entire album is "Little Drummer Boy." Personally, I have always been a fan of this song, but to hear it done as a rock song, instead of a traditional Christmas carol, made it infinitely better in my opinion. And in this case, Dylan's voice fits the song quite nicely and only serves to make the song better still.
Another amazing song on the album is "Must Be Santa," a fast and upbeat song that is especially geared toward children, and, in fact, there are kids featured with Dylan on this song. No matter how old you are, though, it's hard not to smile when you hear this song describing all the characteristics of Santa. The only drawback of this song is that it is just a little too fast. Although it is supposed to be a fast song, it feels like Dylan is rushing through it too quickly.
Despite the good aspects of the album, not every song is spectacular. Dylan could have probably left well enough alone with "The Christmas Song" simply because it has been done so well in the past. Overall, however, this album is surprisingly well done, and definitely worth a listen during the upcoming holiday season.
What really makes this CD so special, though, is that all the royalties Dylan earns throughout the world will be donated to organizations that feed the hungry and homeless throughout the holiday season.
So, if you're looking to add some new music to your Christmas collection, Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart" is a great choice, plus part of the proceeds go to helping those in need. That's something we should all try to do more of, especially around this time of year.
