For many students, the longer they go through college, the more holiday breaks become free chances to catch up on or get ahead in homework. It's a few extra days to try and sleep in, to finish that paper they've been ignoring for the past week or so and to think about studying for the finals that are waiting for them once they return to campus.

"I'm looking forward to the break," senior Tiffany McKee said, "though I know that I won't want to come back for that last week of class and finals."

McKee will be heading home to Forest, Ohio, to spend Thanksgiving with her family. She says at least part of her break will be spent applying to graduate schools while she has the extra time.

But midterms and papers aside, McKee still sees Thanksgiving as a time to recall what she's thankful for and what she's been able to experience in the past year. McKee says she is grateful for her family, friends, her opportunity to study abroad in Ireland at the beginning of the year and her boyfriend.
Junior Kathleen Farris says that she is most grateful for her health and family.

"I lost my grandpa recently, and it really made me think about how great it is to have such a big family who all loves one another," Farris said. "I am very lucky to have a loving family."
Farris also plans to use the extra time to catch up on several big papers and says that her family will also probably revisit an old tradition of going together to see a movie on Thanksgiving Day.

"We might go see 'Where the Wild Things Are,'" Farris said. "Even though my brother and I are grown, we still like to see those family movies on Thanksgiving."

Senior Donhnall Godfrey has similar plans for Thanksgiving break.

"Eating, predominately," Godfrey said. "I'll also be working Black Friday from 3:30 a.m. to 1 p.m."

Like Farris, part of Godfrey's break will also be spent on homework, especially his senior capstone project. Godfrey also plans to use the time to catch up with friends in Parkersburg and will attend two Thanksgiving dinners and celebrate several family birthdays.

"I'm thankful for my friends," Godfrey said, "and the general mental health they help me regain."

Even though breaks are generally looked forward to as a time to play catch-up, students still view Thanksgiving as a time to be thankful, to spend time with family and friends.

"That's the nice thing," Godfrey said. "By break, I'll be mostly done with capstone. I'm thankful to be done with that."

We need to be thankful for every single day and remember about it not only at thanksgiving time!
