This year, Sigma Kappa's "Week of Giving" includes a number of volunteer and fundraising activities. All proceeds and hours of service will benefit Sigma Kappa's philanthropies, including The Alzheimer's Association, The Maine Sea Coast Mission and Inherit the Earth.
Monday, Nov. 9 marked the day on which Sigma Kappa was founded. Every Sigma Kappa sorority across the nation is holding its own "Week of Giving" to honor the founders and perform one of the main Standards of Excellence: Service.
The Beta Theta chapter at Marietta kicked off the week with a Founder's Day Recognition Ceremony to honor current professors at Marietta. The reception was held in Andrews Hall Monday evening. Throughout the week the girls also volunteered at the O'Neill Senior Center, held a river clean up and baked cookies for other Greek establishments, Campus Police and the Marietta Police and Fire Departments.
Sophomore Brittany Meyers said, "I am very excited to participate in the Week of Giving because it shows the community what Sigma Kappa really stands for."
The biggest event of the week will be held Friday and is known as The UltraViolet Campaign. This year's campaign will be: The UltraViolet Masterpiece; Paint a Sigma Kappa At this event, held outside of Andrews Hall from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., students will be able to spend from $1 to $5 for a cup, balloon or bucket of paint to actually paint a Kappa.
In addition to painting the masterpiece, hot drinks will be available and students will be able to purchase a violet for $1 in memory of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.
"This is the highlight of the semester and a real opportunity for Sigma Kappa to emphasize the fact that service is one of our values," said sophomore Rachel Baughman, the sorority's foundation chair.
Of the 57 girls in the sorority, each one is required to donate four hours of time this week to volunteering, adding up to 228 hours of service.
