Self-defense helps educate students

The women of Marietta College had a unique opportunity to expand their horizons over the past two weeks while the Marietta College Police Department put on self-defense classes.
Campus Police heard from multiple female students about their worries after a female student was sexually assaulted on campus and decided to help by organizing self-defense classes offered to Marietta College students.
Classes were run by David Valkinburg, who is the Chief of Marietta College's Police Department, and were limited to 20 students so that each student felt comfortable to learn in the environment.
The class focused on simple moves that women can easily accomplish if they were under attack. The class also operated in a state of mind that women do not always have to be the victim.
Sophomore Jenn Davis attended the classes, and found them very useful. "I live in an all girls dorm, and after the recent attacks, we all began to feel a little uneasy about what would happen if we were put in that situation."
For students still interested, more self-defense classes in the future look promising.
