The Marietta College theatre department will be putting on its last show of the season-the musical "The Spitfire Grill"-in six performances April 11, 12, 13 and 17, 18, 19. All shows start at 8 p.m. and cost $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $8 for students, and free to MC faculty and students.
The musical tells the story of a 20 year old woman who, having just been released from prison, seeks to start over in the small town of Gilead, Wisc. When the young woman, Percy (played by Laura Horn), receives a room to live in and a job at The Spitfire Grill, she discovers that Hannah (played by Britney Koser), the owner and operator, has long been trying to sell the restaurant. When Percy finally suggests a raffle and essay contest as a way to sell the grill, the lives of many of Gilead's residents are changed forever; while reading the essays sent in, they discover in themselves a renewed desire to make a happy life in the small town.
The musical actually tells a similar story to the 1996 movie from which it was based, but with an alternative ending.
This performance is directed at Marietta College by Stephen Rader and features the following students: Laura Horn (Percy), Dan Clunies (Joe), Jean Marie Brizendine (Effy), Britney Koser (Hannah), Lauren Berry (Shelby), Patrick Simone (Caleb), and Shawn Casey (Eli). Musical direction is provided by David Tadlock.
Tickets for the show may be reserved through the MC Theatre Box Office at 740-376-4678.
