The purpose of a college education is to prepare you for the workforce.

Wrong.

Tear down your altars and lifeless idols

The right to a free press is the oldest Jonas brother of the Bill of Rights. It's not as dreamy as the right to bear arms or as funny as the right to a public trial. We forget that it has just as much talent. Objectivity in a newsroom, while never perfect, is essential to the democratic exchange of ideas.

Rough and tumble: the spirit of Cleveland

The Observer, Case Western Reserve University, OH

A few weeks ago I took RTA's Healthline from the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic Public Square. I was planning to meet up with a friend of mine over at Progressive Field to watch the Indians face the White Sox. After grabbing some bagels at a local convenience store, I went to the stadium and sat down at one of the picnic benches near the right field dugout.

Letter to the Editor: Stronger SEC commitment to accountability, their constitution needed before they take away Greek Life's money

The Observer, Case Western Reserve University, OH

For the past three years as a (non-Greek) Case student, I have entrusted my hundred-plus dollar Student Activity Fee (SAF) to the Student Executive Committee (SEC). Like many other students, I have hoped that they would judiciously divide and supervise the funds among the "big five" umbrella organizations, which purport to benefit the entire student body and provide a rich campus experience.

Letter to the Editor: Proud to be Greek

Next week an important decision will be put in front of the student body. Tucked into the freshmen [USG] elections is a referendum that was petitioned for last year. The referendum is to decide whether or not Greek Life on this campus should remain fully funded.

Hurricane Katrina: A survivor's look back

The Eastern Progress, Eastern Kentucky University, KY

Five years ago, I was a young U.S. Marine stationed in New Orleans, La. As a Marine, I was trained to respond to any situation with speed, intensity and a level head; but when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, I had no idea how to respond. Generally, any New Orleans resident can tell you that hurricane evacuations happen just about every week during the summer, so by late August 2005, we all left the city of New Orleans thinking this was another false alarm and that we would be back in a day or two.

Puerto Rican birth certificates are determined invalid by Ohio too early

It's a reasonable assumption that everyone probably knows someone who has a fake ID. Whether you know a friend of a friend that has one or you have one stashed in your wallet behind your bank card, fake IDs are a valuable find.

They get you into places you wouldn't normally be allowed.

My Turn: Coming full circle with country music

The Eastern Progress, Eastern Kentucky University, KY

I began to develop favorites in music at a very early age, and being surrounded by a family full of musicians never hindered that process. My mother was and still is an avid Stevie Nicks follower, and my dad, although one of U2's biggest fans, always loved to play bluegrass and country on his old acoustic.

Religious freedom for everyone, remember that Mr. Politician

Welcome back students, faculty, administration and maintenance. It's bound to be another fun and exciting year at Slippery Rock. Now, as you walk about campus muttering to yourself about how you must have the world's most god-awful professor and how you hate that man even though you two just formally met, I want you to ask yourself something: "Would you stab him?"

Not just stab with a pencil or poke with a pin- I am talking about full-blown prison mauling for no reason other than he's one of "them.

Domestic partnership benefits: Policy is long overdue

Domestic partnership benefits: Policy is long overdue

The Eastern Progress, Eastern Kentucky University, KY

After more than a decade, university administration finally made the momentous decision to establish domestic partnership benefits for Eastern employees.

What this means for faculty and staff members is that if their living partners are over 18 years old, not a relative, not employed by the homeowner and ineligible for Medicare, then they will receive extended benefits through the university.

Indoor tanning: Harmful to your wallet and health

The Concordian, Concord University, WV

6 days ago by Julia Spencer

To pay for the new health care plan, congress has passed legislation allowing a tax to be placed on indoor tanning beds. An extra 10% tax on indoor tanning went into effect July 1st and is finally beginning to be noticed by shop owners and customers alike.
